The team is one of the original members of the NBA as well as one of two of the original NBA teams to still be located in their original city. They have won two NBA championships (1970 and 1973).

Since 2010, the Knicks have been owned by The Madison Square Garden Company. The teams’ president is Phil Jackson and the head coach is Jeff Hornacek.

The Knicks through the Years

The Knicks were originally established in 1946 and were one of the founding members of the Basketball Association of America (BAA). This would later become the NBA in 1949 after its merger with the National Basketball League (NBL).

In the early years of the NBA, the Knicks enjoyed a significant amount of success. Under their first head coach, Joe Lapchick, the Knicks were a regular feature in the playoffs and even appeared in three back to back NBA finals starting in 1950.

After Lapchick’s resignation in 1956, the team struggled and lost a lot of their original form. Their fortunes would look up again with the arrival of their new head coach in 1960, Red Holzman. It was under Holzman that the Knicks were able to get to two NBA championships in the 1970’s.

The 80’s were hit and miss for the team. Things would begin to look up again in the 90’s when the team was led by center and future Hall of Famer Patrick Ewing. The team regularly made it to the playoffs and even appeared in two NBA Finals in 1994 and 1999, although they didn’t ultimately win.

The Knicks Today

The Knicks haven’t displayed their old form in a number of years. The 2012-12 season marked the first time the team had won a division title in 19 years. In the 2014-15 season, the team finished with a record of 17-65, the worst in the history of the franchise.

It remains to be seen whether the Knicks will be able to improve their performance and stats.
