Marlins History

Wayne Huizenga was the first owner of the Miami Marlins, who was awarded an expansion franchise for a $95 million fee.

The franchise was established in 1991 and played its debut season in 1993. They were initially called the Florida Marlins and changed their name to the Miami Marlins on November 11, 2011. With the change of name came new uniforms, color scheme and logo. Initially, the Marlins played their home games at the Joe Robbie Stadium. This was also where the Miami Dolphins played their home games. In 2012, the team moved to Marlins Park in downtown Miami. Unlike their previous home, their present ballpark was exclusively constructed for baseball.

A Slow Start to a Glorious Decade

The Marlins played their inaugural MLB season in 1993. From 1993 to 1996, the Marlins failed to make a mark. They lost all of their regular seasons and failed to make it to the playoffs. However, in 1997, all of this would change.

In the 1997 MLB season, the Miami Marlins won 92 regular season games and were runner ups in their division. This was enough for the Marlins to qualify for post-season games. In the post-season, they faced the San Francisco Giants for the National League Division Series (NLDS). The Marlins defeated the Giants 3-0. They then proceeded to the National League Championship Series (NLCS). The Atlanta Braves were their opponents who were defeated by the Marlins 4-2. For the first time in Marlins history, the team found itself in the World Series.

In the World Series, the Marlins faced the Cleveland Indians. Though the Indians were a much older and experienced team with already two World Series titles, they were defeated by the Marlins 4-3. The Marlins, however, could not repeat their 1997 season momentum and slumped from 1998 to 2002. During these five seasons, they could not qualify for the post-season games. However, all of this would once again change in 2003.

The Marlins’ 2003 regular season was similar to their 1997 season in more than one ways. They came second in their division and qualified for the post-season, their first since 1997. In the post-season, for the NLDS, they once again faced the Giants, who they defeated 3-1. Advancing to the NLCS, the Marlins faced the Chicago Cubs, who, too were defeated 4-3. The Marlins, for the second time made it to the World Series facing the formidable New York Yankees. The Marlins defeated the Yankees 4-2, to win their World Series title.

Marlins Park

Marlins Park was built exclusively for baseball. Built as a new and state-of-the-art stadium at the Miami Orange Bowl location, it is the third smallest stadium in the MLB with a seating capacity of 36,742. It is also the sixth major league baseball stadium with a retractable roof. As the stadium’s name hasn’t been finalized as yet, therefore Marlins Park remains the ballpark’s temporary name.

The Citrus Series

The Citrus Series is an intraleague series between the Marlins and Tampa Bay Rays. The Rays, being the younger team, played their first game against the Marlins on June 22, 1998. Since then the two teams have played a total of 107 games, out of which the Rays have won 55 games. Though considered a rivalry by the fans, according to former Rays manager Joe Maddon, the Citrus Series is not a true rivalry.

The Marlins’ Culture

Inspired by the NBA and NFL, the Marlins became the first in the MLB to have a dance/cheer squad of its own. The team is called the Marlins Mermaids. Other MLB teams followed suit and developed their own cheer teams. MLB’s first all-male dance/energy squad, The Marlins Manatees, were also introduced by the Marlins.
