Named After a Song
Mariah Carey was born in Huntington, New York, on March 27, 1970 to an African-American father and Irish-American mother. Her first name comes from the famous song They Call the Wind Maria by Harve Presnell. Carey’s parents divorced when she was three. She was raised by her mother.
Cut off from her father and maternal side of the family, Carey found solace in radio and singing. When she was in high school, she was writing poems and adding melodies to them. In addition, she was writing songs with Gavin Christopher, the famous R&B singer, and record producer. Carey and Christopher worked on her first demo tape, which was later sent to various record labels without success. At this time, she came across the then relatively unknown Brenda K. Starr.
The Big Break
It was Starr who introduced Carey to Tommy Mottola, the then head of Columbia Records and Carey’s future husband. After listening to Carey’s demo tape’s first two songs, Mottola signed her up. Columbia Records would go on to release Mariah Carey’s seven studio albums.
