Early Years

Lady Gaga’s real name is Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta. She was born in Manhattan, New York, on March 28, 1986. Lady Gaga has Italian-French-Canadian ancestry. She attended a private all-girls school where she found herself to be an outsider.

With an interest in music and performing arts, at the age of four, Lady Gaga began to play the piano, and wrote her first piano ballad at the age of 13. At the age of 14, she had her first open mic experience. Lady Gaga also participated in school plays playing lead roles. After graduation, she attended New York University (NYU). Being a student at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, she sharpened her songwriting skills and also wrote essays.

Early Musical Beginnings

Gaga was only 19 and a sophomore at NYU when she dropped out to pursue music full-time. On the road to stardom, she faced many challenges.

She initially formed a band with NYU friends, and was a regular at the downtown Lower East Side club scene. Gaga later left the band and participated in a performance art circuit. And though she finally signed a record deal with Def Jam Recordings, she was later dropped by the record label.

Akon Comes to the Rescue

Lady Gaga was working as a songwriter for Sony /ATV Music Publishing, when her vocal talent was discovered by Akon. He helped her sign a record deal initially with Interscope Records and later with his own record label, KonLive Distribution. These two record labels would later release her first two studio albums.

Lady Gaga Discography

The Fame, released in 2008, was Lady Gaga’s debut album. It made her an international star overnight. The album was a commercial hit, which was certified 4×Platinum in the US. It debuted at the number one spot in Austria, Canada, Germany, Switzerland and the UK. On the US Billboard 200, it debuted at No.2.

This album equally impressed the music critics. AllMusic, Entertainment Weekly and The Guardian gave unanimous positive reviews. The Guardian noted the album packed an immensely addictive melody or an inescapable hook, virtually everything sounds like another hit single

The Fame included some of Gaga’s early hits Paparazzi, Poker Face, Just Dance and Love Game.

In 2011, Lady Gaga released her second album, Born This Way. It debuted at No.1 on at least 10 charts across the world, including Billboard 200. The album had some of Lady Gaga’s biggest hits Born This Way, The Edge of Glory, You and I and Judas. This album incorporated elements of house, disco, electro-industrial, Europop, rock and roll, heavy metal and opera.

Artpop, Lady Gaga’s third album was released in 2013. It, too, debuted at the No.1 spot on Billboard 200. Do What U Want and Applause were some of the biggest hits from this album. Artpop became the 2013’s ninth best-selling album and sold over 2 million copies globally.

In 2014, Cheek to Cheek (with Tony Bennett) came out. It became Gaga’s third consecutive album to debut at No.1 on Billboard 200. Certified Gold in the US, it included the hit single I Can’t Give You Anything but love.  It was a jazz album and the two artists recorded Cheek to Cheek, since they wanted to introduce the genre to a younger generation.

Joanne is Gaga’s latest and fourth consecutive No.1 debuting album on Billboard 200. Perfect Illusion, Million Reasons, Diamond Heart, Angel Down, A-Yo, Come to Mama and Sinner’s Prayer are some of the most popular songs from this album. Joanne was a marked departure from the artist’s earlier album as it is a dance-pop and soft rock album. The Rolling Stone magazine noted Joanne to be an old-school Nineties soft rock album, heavy on the acoustic guitar.
