The Chiefs were originally called the Dallas Texans. The team was owned by Lamar Hunt, a native of Dallas, Texas, who wanted a professional football team in his town. When his request was turned down by the NFL, he started his own league, the AFL. The franchise played till 1962 and in their first two seasons, the Texans won as many games as they lost, 14-14. Their third season, which also turned out to be their last, was exceptional. With an 11-3 record, the Texans for the first time secured a place in the American Football League Championship Game against the Houston Oilers. The Texans defeated the Oilers. The team was however relocated to Kansas City in 1963 and was renamed the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Chiefs of AFL

The Kansas City Chiefs emerged as one of the strongest teams in the AFL. The Chiefs made the most playoff appearances and also won the most AFL Championships, 3 in total. Due to his team’s dominance, Lamar Hunt became a powerful figure during the AFL-NFL merger and proposed a championship game between the two leagues calling it the “Super Bowl”. The inspiration for the name came from ‘Super Ball’, a favorite toy of Hunt’s kids. Super Bowl was officially recognized as the NFL Championship game much later however.

The Kansas City Chiefs won a total of 87 games from 1960 to 1969, which is a league record. During this period, they won three AFL Championships (1962, 1966 & 1969).

The Chiefs in the NFL

The team joined the NFL in 1970 and missed their first NFL playoff. However, they more than made up for it in the next season and ended the regular season with 10-3-1 record. They advanced into the playoffs and won the AFC West Division.

In 1972, the Chiefs moved to their home field, Arrowhead Stadium. It was a newly constructed facility outside of downtown Kansas City. The Chiefs played their first preseason game against the St. Louis Cardinals which they won. The team finished its 1973 season on a high note with 7-5-2 record. They however did not make the playoffs and would not make the playoffs again for the rest of the decade. As a result, Hank Stram, the Chiefs’ head coach who had been with them from the beginning was fired. Due to the departure of a couple of star players, the Chiefs became one of the worst performing NFL teams from 1975 to 1988.

The Marty Schottenheimer Era

In December, 1988, Lamar Hunt made management changes and as a result Marty Schottenheimer was hired as the new head coach. Schottenheimer would coach the Chiefs from 1989 to 1998. He was previously with the Cleveland Browns. Under his leadership, the Chiefs would make the playoffs seven times. In addition to Schottenheimer’s efforts, the Chiefs were able to achieve this feat with the help of star defense players Derrick Thomas and Neil Smith.

Schottenheimer turned the team into a balanced offensive defensive unit, where the team’s offense was led by players such as Barry Word, Stephone Paige, Christian Okoye, and Steve DeBerg. The defensive block was led by Thomas, Smith, Deron Cherry and Albert Lewis. Not to forget, Nick Lowery who became the most successful kicker in league’s history.

The 1993 Season

The 1993 season was arguably the best for the franchise. Joe Montana was the quarterback and Marcus Allen, the running back. The Chiefs finished their regular season at 11-5 and made the playoffs as a wild card team. They defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers 27-24 and advanced to the divisional playoffs. For the divisional championship game, they met the Oilers and defeated them 28-20 and advanced to the conference championship game. The Chiefs, however, lost to the Buffalo Bills 30-13. This would turn out to be Chiefs’ last post season victory for the next 21 years.
