Early Life before Stardom
Justin Bieber was born to Jeremy Bieber and Pattie Mallette. His father was never really involved in his life that much, but his mother was quite devoted as she felt she needed to give him a better life. Mallette had a tough childhood, suffering sexual violence and abuse at the hands of her close relatives and family friends. She lost her sister to car accident at a very young age and her parents soon informed her that they couldn’t afford to keep her dreams of becoming an actress alive. All these factors led to a series of bad decisions, including dropping out of high school at the age of fifteen, drugs, petty theft, teen pregnancy and even a suicide attempt that eventually landed her in a psych ward.
However this would prove to be a blessing in disguise as she found God and Christianity over there and it turned her life around. After learning that she was pregnant, she decided to fight for herself and her unborn child. Justin Bieber came into the world in March, 1994, and instantly became the center of Mallette’s world.
Young Justin Bieber
In 2015, Justin Bieber talked about the amazing influence his mother has had on him, stating that “This woman taught me everything I know; how to love, how to be compassionate, how to be strong when the only thing u want to be is weak (and) how to stand when all you want to do is fall”. These words have never been truer than they were in the first few years of Bieber’s life. Being a single teen mom can be tough, and so Mallette moved from one home to the next in search of stability. She finally found it in her own mother, when she moved into her house. However she still had to work two jobs at a time to make ends meet and at times Justin was the only thing that kept her going.
Growing up, Justin was a naughty and energetic child, which kept his family on their toes. He was susceptible to breaking things and getting into trouble, while his teachers complained that keeping him in check was like handling ten kids all at once. However the relationship between mother and son grew very strong as they bonded over their shared love of R&B music and spent most of their time together.
Justin’s love for music became apparent from an early age, and his family actively supported him in this endeavor. His mother wanted him to achieve all of his dreams, since she herself had never gotten the opportunity to do so, and she started to tape his singing attempts, sharing them with her family and friends. Bieber himself started to learn various musical instruments, and became quite adept at playing the guitar, piano and drums. His singing also kept on improving and so he started taking part in different musical talent shows around his area.
In 2007, when he was only twelve years old, he decided to take part in yet another talent show. He performed the single “So Sick” by the popular R&B star Ne-Yo and like always his mother taped the whole routine and uploaded it online. However this time, there was a slight difference. Along with her family and friends, many online users also praised the young singer’s amazing talents, and through word of mouth, his video and YouTube channel went viral. Bieber became an online sensation and encouraged by this amazing response, his mother kept uploading more videos of his various covers and the world ate it up. It wasn’t long before the record studios also started paying attention.
Justin’s Entry into the Music World
Scooter Braun, a former record company executive, was at his home in Atlanta when he came across a video of a twelve year old with incredible singing abilities. He was more than just intrigued and being the tenacious businessman that he was, he started to make a few calls in order to locate this prodigious talent. It took time and a lot of effort, but he finally managed to get hold of Justin’s mother. Even though she was a little apprehensive about letting her son get into the music industry at first, she relented after receiving support from her congregation at church, as well as her desire to give her son the life he deserved.
The new manager proved that he was also a shrewd businessman and realized that the publicity that Justin was getting from his online presence could not be matched by anything else at his disposal. So he asked Mallette to keep on uploading videos, which by that time recorded more than million views each. Braun then reached out to different record labels and industry bigwigs in order to get his new client a recording contract. He soon had the attention of the world famous artists Usher and Justin Timberlake. Both wanted to be involved in Justin’s career and after extensive discussions, Usher managed to beat out Timberlake for Justin’s signature. At the time he told legendary record producer L.A. Reid, “Man you are not going to believe the talent that I have come across. This kid is really like once in a lifetime glimpse at a prodigy or something incredible”. Reid, who didn’t need any more convincing, signed Bieber to his Island Def Jam Music Group soon after.
Justin Bieber’s Pop Repertoire – My World (E.P)
Bieber immediately got down to work after he signed his record deal. He had been uploading videos on YouTube throughout this process, but it was now time for him to release an original song and define his own style of music. He started working on his debut Extended Play (E.P), titled “My World” and released his first single, called “One Time” in May of 2009. The song made it into the top 20 on music charts in several countries and was certified multiplatinum in the US and platinum in Australia and Canada. The E.P came out later that year and made it to number five on the Billboard charts, as well as number one and number three on the Canadian and UK music charts, respectively.
My World 2.0
This was the name given to Bieber’s debut album, which came out in 2010. It managed to top the Billboard charts and made him the youngest artist since Stevie Wonder to make it all the way to number one. It also topped the charts in six other countries and made it to the top ten on the music charts in fourteen additional countries. It was certified Diamond in Brazil, multiplatinum in Canada and the US, and platinum in Italy and Belgium.
After the release of the album, Bieber embarked on his debut concert tour titled ‘My World Tour’. It started with a concert in Hartford in June, 2010 and went on till October 2011. The tour featured over 125 shows, spread across North and South America, Europe, Asia and the Oceanic states. It managed to make over 53 million dollars in revenue and is among the highest earning concert tours of all time. A concert film was also made of the tour titled “Justin Bieber: Never Say Never” and managed to make around a hundred million dollars at the Box Office.
Under the Mistletoe
This was Bieber’s follow-up to his 2010 record, as well as his first Christmas album to date. It came out in 2011 and broke several records along the way. It became the first male Christmas themed album to make its debut at number one on the Billboard charts, and became Justin’s third number one album in a row, a feat never been achieved before by somebody under the age of eighteen. It made it to the number one position in four countries and was certified platinum in seven more.
Justin Bieber’s third album hit the shelves in 2012. In this record he had tried to do something different with his sound, deliberately moving away from his teen pop image and moving into more serious R&B tracks. Continuing the tradition set by his previous records, this album also debuted at number one on the Billboard charts and was certified platinum in the US, selling over one point six million copies to date. The record also made it to number one on music charts in fifteen additional countries and was certified platinum in eight others.
Even though Bieber had been performing on stage in standalone shows for quite a while, he had not been on a proper concert tour since his ‘My World Tour’ in 2010. After the release of “Believe”, he finally announced dates for his latest tour called the ‘Believe Tour’. Millions of fans clamored for Justin Bieber tickets and most of the venues sold out tickets overnight. Spread over seven legs, the tour began in Glendale in September, 2012 and went on till its last show in Perth, Australia in December of 2013. Justin played just over a 160 shows during the tour, and it grossed over 209 million dollars, making it one of the highest grossing concerts in the last decade.
It had been three years since Bieber last released an album. During this time he had been involved in several controversies, turbulent relationships and his life had been under constant media coverage. In order to find some semblance of control, Justin decided to focus on his album and finally released it in 2015. He brought more dimensions to his sound, with an added emphasis on electronic and pop music. The result was a powerhouse of catchy and moving tunes that sent all ‘Beliebers’ into frenzy.
It made it to number one in eleven countries including the US, Canada and Australia. It also made it to the top ten charts in over 32 countries and was certified platinum in ten more. It led to the ‘Purpose World Tour’, which started in Seattle in March, 2016 and is scheduled to go on till November, 2016 where the last show will take place at the famous O2 Arena in London, UK. The tickets have already started to sell out, with thousands more in search for their Justin Bieber tickets as well. Justin Bieber’s Rise to Superstardom
