John Clayton Mayer was born and raised in Connecticut. It was Michael J. Fox’s guitar performance in Back to the Future which inspired him to learn the guitar. A neighbor gave him Stevie Ray Vaughan’s cassette, which had him hooked on the blues genre. He was so fixated on his newfound love for music that his parents took him to a psychiatrist. When he was seventeen, Mayer suffered from cardiac dysrhythmia and was hospitalized. He says that the experience made him a songwriter, as he wrote his first lyrics the night he left the hospital. While still in high school, Mayer started to perform at local bars and clubs. When he was nineteen, he enrolled in the Berklee College of Music, but later dropped out after a year to pursue music professionally.
In 1997, Mayer moved to Atlanta along with songwriter Clay Cook. Cook would play an instrumental role in Mayer’s early successes. Together the two also formed a band called Lo-Fi Masters. The band was short-lived however, but even after the split from Cook, Mayer continued playing at local clubs, slowly but steadily gaining legion of fans.
The Big Break
The big break Mayer was looking for came in 2001. He was performing at the South by Southwest Festival, when he was noticed and later signed on by Aware Records. Later on, Mayer also signed a record deal with Columbia Records, which also released his debut EP and subsequent albums.
John Mayer’s Discography
Mayer’s debut album Room for Squares was released in 2001. It debuted at No.8 on the Billboard 200 and was certified 4×Platinum by the RIAA in the US. The album received positive reviews from critics. The Rolling Stone gave it 4 out of 5 stars and called it irresistible. Room for Squares also earned Mayer his first Grammy Award for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance. Mayer’s signature song Your Body Is a Wonderland was from this album.
In 2003, Mayer released his second studio album, Heavier Things. Debuting at No.1 on Billboard 200, the album was certified 2×Platinum in the US. It also impressed the critics with Billboard magazine credited the album for firmly establishing him as a legitimate--albeit still puppy-eyed--singer/songwriter. Clarity and Bigger than My Body were two of the biggest hit singles from this album.
Continuum, Mayer’s third studio album came out in 2006. It debuted at No.2 on Billboard 200 and was also certified 2xPlatinum by the RIAA. A departure from his previous two albums, Continuum incorporated elements of soul and blues. The album impressed Rolling Stone magazine, which declared it the eleventh best album of 2006. Continuum alone was nominated for three Grammy Awards, out of which it won two. Stop This Train and Gravity were two of the standout singles from this album.
Battle Studies and Born and Raised were Mayer’s fourth and fifth albums respectively. The former was released in 2009, and the latter in 2012. Battle Studies was certified Platinum, and Born and Raised was certified Gold. Both albums debuted at No.1 position on Billboard 200 and included hit singles Edge of Desire, Half of My Heart and Who Says.
In 2013, Paradise Valley was released. The album debuted at No.2 on Billboard 200. Rolling Stone noted that Mayer was in a relaxed, joyful frame of mind... Mayer continues to blow down the road, this time carrying far less baggage and all the better for it. Who You Love became the most popular single from the album.
Mayer’s latest album, The Search for Everything was released in 2017. It, too, debuted at No.2 on Billboard 200. The album has been positively reviewed by many music critics, with AllMusic giving it 4.5 out of 5 stars. Still Feel like Your Man and Love on the Weekend were two of the hit singles in this album.
