The Guitar playing Surfing Dude

Jack Hody Johnson was born to Jeff Johnson, a famous surfer in Hawaii, on May 18, 1975. Raised in Oahu, Hawaii, Johnson learnt how to surf at the age of five. At the age of eight, he learnt to play the guitar and wrote his first song at the age of 12. When he turned 17, he was invited to the finals of the Pipeline Masters, one of the most prestigious surfing events on the island.  He, however, could not continue after he suffered a serious surfing accident.

After graduation Johnson moved to California to attend the University of California, Santa Barbara, and graduated with a degree in Film Studies. While at UCSB, he joined a band, Soil, and played rhythm guitar. Soil opened for, then relatively unknown acts in the Santa Barbara area, Dave Matthews and Sublime.

Musical Influences

Johnson was musically inspired by Jimi Hendrix. As far as songwriting was concerned, he credits Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Bob Marley, The Beatles, Otis Redding, Sublime and A Tribe Called Quest.

Jack Johnson’s Discography

Jack Johnson’s debut album Brushfire Fairytales was released in 2001. It debuted at No.1 on the official New Zealand Music Chart, at No.34 on Billboard 200 and at No.36 on the UK Albums Chart. The album was a commercial hit, which was certified Platinum by the RIAA in the US. Bubble Toes, Flake and Fortunate Fool were few of the hit singles that were a part of this album.

In 2003, Johnson’s second album On and On was released. While, it, too, was certified Platinum in the US, it did much better on the charts. It debuted at No.3 on Billboard 200 and at No.30 on the UK Albums Chart. Wasting Time, The Horizon Has Been Defeated and Taylor were some of the biggest hit singles from this album.

Jack Johnson’s third album In Between Dreams was released in 2005. It debuted at No.2 position on Billboard 200 and at No.1 on the UK Albums Chart. With Double-Platinum certification in the US, this album remains his most commercially successful project to date. It included hit singles Better Together, Banana Pancakes, Sitting, Waiting, Wishing, Good People, Never Know and Breakdown.

In 2008, Johnson released Sleep through the Static. It debuted at the top of Billboard 200, UK Albums Chart and ARIA Charts. In the US, Australia, and New Zealand, it was certified Platinum. Some of the most popular singles from this album were If I Had Eyes, Sleep through the Static and Hope.

To the Sea was released in 2010 and like its predecessor, debuted at the top of Billboard 200. It wasn’t as big of a commercial hit as its predecessors though and was certified Gold in the US. Nevertheless, it included hits like You and Your Heart, At Or With Me and No Good With Faces.

In 2013, Johnson’s next album, From Here to Now to You was released. It became Johnson’s third consecutive album to have debuted at No.1 position on Billboard 200. Commercially, it was not as big of a hit and was therefore not certified in the US. In Canada though, it became a Gold record. I Got You and Washing Dishes became two of the biggest hits from this album.
