In the early 1980’s, Duran Duran were considered to be trailblazers on the music scene. Their fresh sound and experimental hits lead them to establishing a dedicated fan base early on in their career. It took them very little time to break out on to the mainstream pop scene shortly after making it big in alternative and underground circles.
Throughout that decade, Duran Duran released a number of hit singles, changed their line-up, and revamped their image. This period of constant change predicated their massive resurgence in the 1990’s.
With the advent of the video age and music channels like MTV, Duran Duran was able to reach a wider audience. They were considered to be one of the leading bands in the "Second British Invasion" of the US, which was heavily pushed by MTV. Duran Duran became known for their music videos that stood out from others of the time due to their more polished look. The band also frequently collaborated with film directors and featured live footage in their videos. The Formation of Duran Duran
Duran Duran came together in 1978 when John Taylor and Nick Rhodes decided to make a resident band for one of the city’s nightclubs, Rum Runner nightclub. The newly formed band went through a number of auditions in search for a lead singer. Many singers played for the band for a short amount of time but wouldn’t stick long term. Finally, Simon Le Bon was found and was made the lead singer. Next, Andy Taylor was brought on as lead guitarist.
In their early years, the band was considered to be part of the New Romantic scene. This scene was characterized by dance music and intense personal style. Other bands that fell within this scene included ABC, Spandau Ballet, and Japan.
By 1980, Duran Duran was recording their demo tapes. They were also performing in clubs across Birmingham and London to increase their exposure. While they were touring with Havel O’Connor, the band received critical attention. This led to an intense bidding war between Phonogram Records and EMI for the chance to sign the band. By the end of the year, Duran Duran decided to sign with EMI because it was the same label that The Beatles were signed on.
Characteristics of Duran Duran
Since the band’s formation, Duran Duran became known for several unique qualities. Firstly, each member in the band had a distinct and keen sense of visual style and aesthetics. They were very determined to create an image for themselves and worked with numerous fashion designers to achieve this goal. As their tastes changed, the band would work with different stylists and incorporate new elements into their image. One of Duran Duran’s defining features has been the fact that they have used fashion as an integral part of their image throughout the course of their career.
Their passion for visual style and design also led them to take an active role in the designing of their album artwork, tour programs as well as other band related materials. They have always worked in close collaboration with graphic designers and many artists to achieve the look they desired for anything affiliated with the band.
Duran Duran also became one of the first bands to work on their own remixes. They would take their singles and create different versions of them using multi-layering and extended performances. This was all done before the advent of digital synthesizers and audio sampling.
