About Conor McGregor – The Early Years
Conor McGregor was born in Crumlin, Dublin, Ireland on 14 July 1988. He took an interest in playing sports from a young age and initially played football very frequently. He played for the Lourdes Celtic Football Club during his youth. By the age of 12, he also began to develop an interest in Boxing. He started boxing as a member of the Crumlin Boxing Club at this stage.
In 2006, McGregor moved from Crumlin to Lucan, another district in Dublin. At this stage in his life, he started a plumbing apprenticeship where he would meet future UFC fighter Tom Egan. The two became friends and began training in mixed martial arts (MMA) together.
The following year, McGregor made his debut as an amateur fighter in a mixed martial arts fight against Kieran Campbell. The showdown was for the Irish Ring of Truth promotion in Dublin. In the first round, McGregor, aged 18, bested his opponent by a technical knockout (TKO).
After his victory, McGregor left the amateur world and turned professional. He was signed by the Irish Cage of Truth promotion. To begin his training, McGregor started working under the guidance of John Kavanagh at the Straight Blast Gym (SBG) in Dublin.
The Start of His MMA Career
After two years of intense training, in 2008, McGregor would officially start in mixed martial arts (MMA) career. It didn’t take him long to make a name for himself in the MMA world; in just two years he was winning big championships. This included the Cage Warriors Featherweight and Lightweight Championships, two championship titles which he would hold at the same time. This caught the attention of the UFC and they were desperate to sign him. In order to sign with UFC, he had to relinquish those two titles which he did.
In February of 2013, UFC announced the signing of McGregor to a multi-fight contract. This made him the second fighter from Ireland to join the company, after fellow SBG team member Tom Egan.
McGregor’s first match up was against Marcus Brimage on the preliminary card of UFC on Fuel TV: Mousasi vs. Latifi. The fight was called 1:07 minutes into the first round with McGregor taking the win. He was relentless in his attack and won his first "Knockout of the Night" award for that match.
In August of 2013, McGregor would tear his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) during a fight with Max Holloway. This required surgery and took him out of action for ten months.
Building a Legacy
McGregor has worked relentlessly to make a name for himself in MMA. He frequently throws off his opponents due to his unusual boxing technique and his use of a wide variety of taekwondo kicks.
He holds the record for the fastest victory in UFC title fight history for defeating José Aldo for the UFC Featherweight Championship via knockout just thirteen seconds into the first round. He also became the first UFC player to hold titles in two weight divisions simultaneously when he won both the UFC Featherweight Championship and the UFC Lightweight Championship.
McGregor has also established himself as arguably the most popular player in MMA history. He consistently draws in massive viewership for pay-per-view events, being the main attraction in four of the six highest selling pay per view events ever held in UFC. At UFC 202 when he went up against Nate Diaz, ticket sales were through the roof and it became the best-selling UFC event in MMA history.
He is currently the UFC Lightweight Champion. If you would like to see this champion live in action, you can get your Conor McGregor tickets here.
