Las Vegas Shows Tickets
Liberace, The Rat Pack, Elvis, Celine Dion, Siegfried & Roy – Do you know what these artists have in common? Apart from being immensely talented, these entertainers made the city of Las Vegas what it is today – The Entertainment Capital of the World.
Even though historians would attribute the birth of Las Vegas to the San Pedro, Los Angeles and Salt Lake railroad in 1905, it wasn’t until 1911 when Las Vegas was incorporated through the plotting and auctioning of future downtown. Another two decades later in 1931, gambling was legalized. This saw the ushering of a new era. It was the age of the Strip, Mob and Glamour. One man at the center of this change was a mobster from Meyer Lansky’s outfit Bugsy Siegel.
Siegel was responsible for the construction and operation of the one of the first casino hotels on the Las Vegas strip, The Flamingo. To attract guests and gamblers, Siegel enlisted many of his friends from Hollywood. Although the man responsible for the casino hotel trend in Las Vegas met a violent end in 1946, it certainly gave the city a direction which continues till today.
The construction of massive luxury casino hotels on the Las Vegas strip required attractions. This gave birth to the import of many entertainers from all over the United States. Many famous acts converged to Las Vegas to attract and entertain tourists and gamblers on behalf of these casinos and hotels. Dubbed as ‘Las Vegas acts’, these entertainers played a critical role in developing Las Vegas as a legitimate tourist destination in the West.
The Fabulous 50’s - Post War Era
The end of the Second World War brought economic prosperity. This was the era of suburban homes, the advent of consumer goods and families having money to buy cars. Las Vegas, to attract tourists, had some of the biggest names in the entertainment industry perform on the strip. This was in part due to the opening of a number of casinos after The Flamingo. Some of the top talent that graced Las Vegas during this decade included Jerry Lewis, Judy Garland, The Marx Brothers, Dean Martin, Nat King Cole, Abbot and Costello and even future president Ronald Reagan. It was during this time Las Vegas earned the title of ‘Entertainment Capital’ of the country.
The Swinging 60’s – Decade That Changed a Nation
The Vietnam War, John Kennedy, Bobby Kennedy, Martin Luther King, The Cuban Missile Crisis – the sixties was rife with uncertainty and change. Las Vegas was no different. This decade saw casino operators competing to book the most famous acts. However, the sixties in Las Vegas will always be known for the Rat Pack. Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis. Jr, Dean Martin with Joey Bishop and Peter Lawford became regulars at the Sands Hotel and Casino particularly in the Copa Room. This group of talented artists even held their ‘Summit in the Sands’ after filming Oceans 11.
The Seventies – The Decline
All the excess finally caught up with Las Vegas in the seventies. Due to all the bad press which mostly highlighted the involvement of mob syndicates in casino operations, Las Vegas’s reputation took a hit and growth stalled. It was during this time that Las Vegas became known for its tacky entertainment and a last performing destination for ‘has been’ stars with Elvis Presley being an exception. Elvis Presley made his second debut at the International Hotel (Las Vegas Hilton) in 1969. He performed 837 shows to sell out crowds until his untimely death in 1977.
The Eighties and Beyond
Las Vegas was partly responsible for reinvigorating Elvis Presley’s career. However, the decline that began in the seventies turned into a recession with many of top drawing talent getting old and losing their star power. Siegfried & Roy emerged as a top talent during this time especially after the death of Liberace who in his hey days commanded an exuberant salary of $300,000 per week. During and after the eighties, performers David Copperfield, Siegfried & Roy, Jerry Seinfeld worked to compete against the other gambling destinations that were cropping up. Atlantic City, NJ, became a major destination after gambling was legalized amid a nationwide recession.
The city of Las Vegas still remains as a choice destination for tourists not only from within the United States but also from outside. With a rich history of entertainment, Las Vegas caters to every type of tourist. This is one of the main reasons Vegas show still hold an aura of wonder making Las Vegas Show tickets hard to come by.
