About Come From Away

The storyline of Come From Away is set in the week after the devastating September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. It aims to tell the true story of what took place when 38 planes were given the order to land in the small town of Gander in Newfoundland, as part of the Operation Yellow Ribbon. The characters of the musical are based on real people from the town of Gander along with some of the nearly 7,000 stranded passengers that they hosted for a while.

The story is a true representation of the extent of human kindness even in the face of the worst kind of adversities and unstable environments.

History of Come From Away

The idea for this musical was first thought of by Michael Rubinoff who was a Toronto based lawyer at the time. The idea pitched by Rubinoff grasped the attention of Irene Sankoff and David Hein. Soon Sankoff and Hein decided to set the wheels in motion. They visited Gander in 2011 on the tenth anniversary of the attacks and interviewed the locals and returning passengers. Some of the stories gathered were translated directly to the musical while others were mixed for story concerns. With this initial research, Rubinoff made an initial workshop version that lasted 45 minutes and was played for the Canadian Music Theater Project. The workshop received positive reviews from the audience and encouraged Sankoff and Hein to begin working on a full scale production.

Since then, the musical has been produced several times. The first professional production was a collaborative endeavor between the La Jolla Playhouse and the Seattle Repertory Theater in 2015. In September of 2016, the show played at the Ford Theater in Washington, D.C. and at the Royal Alexandra Theater in Ontario in the November of the same year. The musical opened on Broadway in the February of 2017. The March 15th, 2017 show was attended by the Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, along with Ivanka Trump and Nikki Haley.

Come From Away is all set to return to the stage one more time in February 2018 in Toronto at the Royal Alexandra Theater. Thanks to the announcement of upcoming productions, Come From Away tickets have been selling out faster than ever before.

Synopsis of Come From Away

The story starts from the morning of September 11, 2001, as the townsfolk of Gander describe life in Newfoundland and how they find out about the terrorist attacks in New York City and Washington. In the aftermath of the attacks, the US airspace was closed and 38 international airplanes are made to land unexpectedly at the Gander airport. The people of the small city sprang to action and helped the stranded passengers settle in for a while, with food, clothing and basic utility items. Soon the passengers learned the real reason why they were landed so randomly. The frightened passengers called their loved ones to let them know they were safe as the local townspeople worked towards helping them cope with what had just happened.

Soon the airspace opened and the passengers flew back to their homes, and began to adjust to the aftermath of the deadly attacks.

With support from a set of tremendous musical numbers such as “Welcome to the Rock” at the start, “38 Planes”, “Blankets and Bedding”, “On the Bus”, “Lead Us Out of the Night”, “Player”, “On the Edge”, “Me and the Sky”, “The Dover Fault”, “Something’s Missing”, “10 Years Later” and “Screech Out”,  the storyline successfully tells a true story in a highly impactful manner.

Praised by critics and fans alike, Come From Away is now headed to theater again. The show has been called “emotionally transcendent” and “one of the most refreshing pieces of art”. Come From Away tickets have been made available to the public via various outlets.
