Even before the establishment of the Colorado Rockies, the Denver area was a hotbed of baseball and had a minor league baseball team of its own called the Denver Bears/Zephyrs. Therefore, the city wanted to have a major league baseball team of its own and an attempt was made to buy and relocate the Pittsburgh Pirates to the Denver area. In 1991, the MLB decided to expand and one of the two new teams were granted to Denver. The new team was named “Rockies”, due to the city’s close proximity to the Rocky Mountains. The Colorado Rockies were placed in the National League West division.

In the beginning, the team played its home games at Mile High Stadium, home of the Denver Broncos, while their new stadium was being built. The Rockies played their first season at Coors Field in 1995.

The Colorado Rockies Seasons

The First Three Seasons

The Rockies finished their inaugural season with a 67-95 record, and were placed 6th in their division. Their winning percentage was 0.414. In their second season, the Rockies stood 3rd in their division. Their winning percentage was better too at 0.453. The 1995 season holds a special place in the Rockies history however.

The Colorado Rockies finished their regular season with 77-67 record, their first winning season. They stood 2nd in their division and made the playoffs for the first time. For the National League Division Series (NLDS), they faced the Atlanta Braves. The experienced Braves, however, turned out to be formidable opponents, who beat the Rockies 3-1. Despite the loss, their manager, Don Baylor won the Major League Baseball Manager of the Year Award.

The Colorado Rockies: 1996 – 2006

The Rockies remained unimpressive during this time and lost most of their regular seasons. However, in 1997, Larry Walker won the MVP Award and in 2002, Jason Jennings won the Major League Baseball Rookie of the Year Award.

2007: The Year That Was

The Rockies have made it to the World Series only once and it was in 2007.

They finished their regular season with a 90-73 record and stood 2nd in their division. This was enough to advance into the playoffs, Rockies second such appearance, and face the Phillies for the NLDS title. The Rockies defeated a much-experienced team 3-0 and advanced into the National League Championship Series (NLCS). For the championship title, they had to defeat the Arizona Diamondbacks, which they did 4-0. The Rockies then found themselves, for the first time, in the World Series Championship. However, the Boston Red Sox defeated them 4-0, which ended the Rockies first ever chance to become the World Champions.

The Present-Day Rockies

Since 2007, the Rockies have made the playoffs only once (2009). They have lost most, if not all, of their regular seasons. The Rockies today , however, boast some of the best ball players in the MLB, starting with Nolan Arenado, Charlie Blackmon, and Carlos Gonzalez. With these players on the roster, the Rockies have a chance of doing better this season.

Rockies Hall of Fame Club

There are 5 MLB teams without any Hall of Famers; Rockies are one of them. While they may not have any Hall of Famers, two of their players have a strong chance of getting named as Hall of Famers, such as Larry Walker and Todd Helton.

Coors Field

As mentioned earlier, Coors Field is the second and present home of the Colorado Rockies. The Coors Brewing Company, manufacturers of Coors beer, own the stadium’s naming rights. The ballpark was built in 1995 and can seat a little over 50,000.
