The Buffalo Bulls were one of the original teams of the American Football League (AFL) in 1960. They would end up in the NFL after the AFL-NFL merger in 1970.
The Buffalo Bills were officially established as a team in 1960 and were charter members of the American Football League. Under the guidance of head coach Buster Ramsey, the team would join the NFL a decade later in the AFL-NFL merger.
Before heading over to the NFL, the Bills were a strong and successful team. They won back-to-back American Football League titles in 1964 and 1965. Since that time, they have not managed to win a league championship.
In their history, they have had periods of success as well as struggle. One of their shinning accomplishments was winning the American Football League Championships consecutively in 1964 and 1965.
They also became the first team in the history of the NFL to win four consecutive conference championships and lose four consecutive Super Bowl games.
Ownership of the team remained pretty consistent for a long period of time. Since the team was founded they were owned by Ralph Wilson and remained in his possession until his death in 2014. After his passing, ownership of the team was passed on to Terry and Kim Pegula.
The Bills also have another unflattering record under their belt, they have the longest active playoff drought across all major professional sport. The last time they qualified for the playoffs was in 1999 making them the only team to not have appeared in the playoffs in the 21st century so far.
The official team colors of the Buffalo Bills are blue, red, white, and black. The Bills Through the Years
After the Bills became members of the NFL their initial few years were rocky, as was the case with many other new teams in the NFL. A turning point for the team came in the mid 1980’s. Several things happened, including the downfall of the United States Football League as well as the Bills getting the chance to make some important draft picks. These factors helped the Bills to become one of the top teams in the league for about a decade into the mid 1990’s. During this time, the Buffalo Bills won four consecutive AFC Championships. They were not however as lucky when it came to the Super Bowl. They would go on to lose all four subsequent Super Bowl tournaments. The 2000s
During this period, the Buffalo Bills had another road block to success. The New England Patriots, who also belonged to the same division as the Bills, were a force to be reckoned with. With Tom Brady, the New England Patriots soon became fierce rivals of the Bills. They also prevented the Bills from reaching the playoffs ever since 1999. This 17 year playoff drought holds the record for being the longest playoff shut-out for any active professional sports team across all leagues.Notable Players and Coaches
Throughout the years, the Bills have had a number of notable players and coaches who have helped them during their winning periods. Head coaches Knox, Saban, and Levy are widely regarded as the three best coaches in the history of the Buffalo Bills.
Star players over the years have included the likes of fullback Cookie Gilchrist, defensive tackle Tom Sestak, quarterback Jack Kemp, and Hall of Fame guard Billy Shaw. In the early 1990’s, some of the best players for the team included the likes of defensive end Bruce Smith, quarterback Jim Kelly, and running back Thurman Thomas. The Buffalo Bills Today
The 2015 season was a big one for the Buffalo Bills, marking the first season that they would be under the Pegula Family's ownership. At the start of the season, it was announced that Rex Ryan would be the new head coach for the Bills. A number of new players were also introduced in the team’s line-up including running back LeSean McCoy, wide receiver Percy Harvin, quarterback Tyrod Taylor, and fullback Jerome Felton.
That season, the team sold a record number of Buffalo Bills tickets, setting a franchise record. Many people assumed that it was the hiring of prolific coach Ryan.
In 2016, the Bills became the first team in the NFL to bring on a full-time female coach, Kathryn Smith. She was brought on as a special team’s quality control coach. That season wasn’t a good one for the Bills; the team had a long list of injured players and Ryan was fired for poor team records. In 2017, the Buffalo Bills brought on Sean McDermott as their new head coach. With players such as LeSean McCoy, Richie Incognito and Sammy Watkins, the Bills are looking for a turnaround of fortune in 2017.
