About the Ba?ltimore Ravens

The Baltimore Ravens were established as a team in 1996. The impetus for creating the team came when the owner of the Cleveland Browns, Art Modell, announced that he was thinking of moving the franchise to Baltimore. The NFL and the city of Cleveland were not too keen on the move.  They therefore reached a settlement which allowed for the Cleveland Browns staying in Cleveland, along with their heritage and replacement personnel. They would officially take control of the Browns in 1999.

Modell was then allowed to take his own personnel and team members to Baltimore to establish a new team. That’s how the Baltimore Ravens were formed.

Since their creation, the team has been one of the most successful teams in the NFL. They have qualified for the NFL playoffs ten times since 2000 and have won the Super Bowl twice (Super Bowl XXXV and XLVII). They have appeared in the AFC championship game four times (2000, 2008, 2011 and 2012) and have won two AFC Championship tiles (2000 and 2012) as well as four AFC North Division titles (2000, 2008, 2011 and 2012).

Since the team was founded in 1996, the Ravens have had one general manager, Ozzie Newsome. They are owned by Steve Bisciotti and have an estimated value of $1.5 billion.  They have also had three head coaches including Ted Marchibroda, Brian Billick, and John Harbaugh.

A History of the Baltimore Ravens

The Baltimore Ravens were founded in 1996, after Art Modell announced that he intended to move the Cleveland Browns to Baltimore, Maryland. The announcement caused a bit of a stir and the city of Cleveland and the NFL had to reach some form of agreement.

The settlement which was reached provided that the city of Cleveland would retain an NFL franchise either by relocation or expansion by 1999. Cleveland would also get to retain the name of the Browns, their official colors, history, and uniform design.

Modell was therefore allowed to take all personnel from the team in Cleveland and relocate to Baltimore. The new team for all intents and purposes would be considered as a new franchise or an expansion team.

The first head coach for the team was Ted Marchibroda. Modell also brought on Ozzie Newsome as the director of football operations. He would eventually be promoted to the position of vice-president/general manager.

When the Ravens first started playing, their home stadium was Baltimore's Memorial Stadium. They moved to Camden Yards in 1998 and now play at M&T Bank Stadium.

Behind the Nam?e

The name for the Baltimore Ravens was chosen from a fan contest which drew in over 33,288 votes. The name ‘Ravens’ was chosen in order to honor Edgar Allan Poe and his famous poem, The Raven. Poe had spent a number of years in his early career in Baltimore and was even buried there. Furthermore, the imagery of a menacing black bird was something that fans were eager to have associated with their new team.

Becoming a stro?ng team

In the first couple of years as a team, the Baltimore Ravens, under coach Marchibroda really struggled. They had three back-to-back losing seasons which led to the management of the team deciding that a change had to be made.

In 1999, Brian Billick was brought in as head coach. The team also introduced new talent including quarterback Tony Banks and receiver Qadry Ismail. Banks went on to have the best season of his career with the Ravens and had 17 touchdown passes with a pass rating of 81.2. Ismail also made his mark, posting a 1,000 yard season. That season, the Ravens finished with an 8-8 record.

By the time the 2000 season came in, the Baltimore Ravens were one of the strongest teams in the NFL. The team developed one of the strongest and most formidable defenses in the history of the league under the guidance of defensive coordinator Marvin Lewis. The Ravens’ defense set an impressive new NFL record – it held the opposing teams to 165 total points. One of the most important players for the Ravens was linebacker Ray Lewis, who was also named Defensive Player of the Year that season.

The Ravens Today

While the Ravens had several very strong seasons, 2015 marked a change of pace for the team. The 2015 season also happened to be the 20th season of the franchises existence. However, a season which saw the team plagued with injuries prevented them from competing in the AFC and Super Bowl. This would be their first losing season in the head coach John Harbaugh and quarterback Joe Flacco era (which began in 2008).

2016 was no better for the team as they failed to qualify for the playoffs for the second year in a row. This was the first time that the team would miss the playoffs for two seasons in a row since 2004-2005. This was also another first in the Harbaugh/Flacco era.

The Ravens, however, with players such as Marshal Yanda and others are looking forward to another winning season, unlike their last two. If you are looking for the best Baltimore Ravens tickets, you can buy them here.
