History of the Braves

The Atlanta Braves are one of the oldest continuously operating professional sports franchise in America. The franchise was established in 1871 as the Boston Red Stockings. From 1871 to 1952, the team was based in Boston, Massachusetts, under different names. After the 1952 season, the team moved to Milwaukee Wisconsin as the Milwaukee Braves. They stayed there till 1965. It was only in 1966 that the team acquired its present name, the Atlanta Braves.

Ballparks

The team has played its home games at nine different stadiums, with South End Grounds in Boston being the oldest and SunTrust Park being the team’s latest. The 2017 MLB season will be the Braves’ first season at SunTrust Park. The ballpark can seat as many as 41,149 and was built with a total cost of more than $1 billion.

Three Time World Series Champions

The Braves are the only MLB team to have won three World Series titles in as many cities. They have been the champions while based in Boston, Milwaukee and Atlanta.

The Braves won their first World Series championship in 1914; they were called the Boston Braves then. The Boston Braves finished their regular season at 94-59 and came first in their league. Advancing into the playoffs and later into the World Series, they faced the Philadelphia Athletics and defeated them 4-0.

The Braves won their second World Series title in 1957. The team was called the Milwaukee Braves back then. The Braves’ 1957 season was the repeat of their 1914 season, in which they finished their regular season at 95-59 and won their division. As a result, they qualified for the playoffs and later for the World Series. For the championship title, the Milwaukee Braves faced the New York Yankees; the Yankees would be defeated 4-3. Interestingly, the Braves qualified for the World Series in the following season (1958) and once again faced the Yankees, who defeated them 4-3.

The Braves’ third and so far, their last World Series title win came in 1995. By then, they had moved to Atlanta. The Atlanta Braves finished their regular season at 90-54. They won their division and qualified for the post-season. For the National League Division Series (NLDS) title, they defeated the Colorado Rockies 3-1 and advanced to the National League Championship Series (NLCS). For the Championship Series title, they defeated the Cincinnati Reds 4-0 and advanced into the World Series, where they faced the Cleveland Indians. The Atlanta Braves defeated the Indians 4-2 and clinched their third World Series title.

Since 1995, the Atlanta Braves have advanced to the World Series twice, losing on both occasions to the Yankees.

Rivalries

The Atlanta Braves have two major rivals, the Philadelphia Phillies and the New York Mets.

Braves-Mets Rivalry - This rivalry started in 1969 when the Mets defeated the Braves in the NLCS. However, it did not become a fierce rivalry till 1994, when both teams became part of the NL East division. The two teams have played a total of 810 games, out of which the Braves have won 441. This reflects Braves’ dominance not just in the NL East division, but also their rivalry over the Mets.

Braves-Phillies Rivalry - The Braves-Phillies rivalry is unique. Typically, a rivalry between two teams is based on hatred, however the Braves-Phillies rivalry is based on respect. The two teams have played a total of 2416 games, out of which the Braves have won 1257 games.

Achievements

The Braves are known as America’s Team. This is because the team enjoys a nation-wide fan following, thanks to its games being aired on TBS from the 1970s to 2007.

From 1991 to 2005, the franchise was one of the most successful in the MLB, winning 14 consecutive division titles.

Ever since the team has relocated to Atlanta, if there is one event that has dominated its records, it is Hank Aaron breaking Babe Ruth’s career home run record.

The Braves are a team with which iconic ballplayers, such as Hank Aaron, Jackie Robinson, Greg Maddux and Dale Murphy have played.
