The Formation of 3? Doors Down
3 Doors Down initially came together in 1996. At this time, the original band members, Brad Arnold (drums and lead vocals), Matt Roberts (guitar), and Todd Harrell (bass) decided that they wanted to create music together. They wrote a few songs and decided to start touring locally, especially outside of Escatawpa, their hometown. On one of their tours, they ended up in Foley, Alabama. It was here that inspiration for their band name struck. While walking through the town, the three members saw a building with a tattered sign which read ‘Doors Down’. They added the ‘3’ in reference to how many band members they were at the time.
For a few years, the line-up of the band remained consistent. However, they started to feel as if they may need to bring in more members. This was when Todd Harrell approached Chris Henderson, a rhythm guitarist, to join 3 Doors Down.
Their first demo CD would contain their soon to be hit single, Kryptonite. The band gave the CD to a local radio station, WCPR-FM, in the hopes of getting airtime and exposure. When their songs started playing, people started calling in and requesting to hear Kryptonite. For 15 weeks straight, the song was the most requested song on the station.
The station’s program director was so impressed that he decided to show the EP to Bill McGathy, his employer from In De Goot Entertainment. The band was subsequently flown to New York to perform a showcase. They played so well live that they were signed by Republic Records.
