Spodosols An order describing soils in which subsurface horizons contain amorphous materials comprising organic matter and compounds of aluminium and often iron that have accumulated illuvially (see ILLUVIATION). Such soils form in acid material, mainly coarse in texture, in humid cool to temperate climates, often beneath coniferous forests.
