Landsat A series of satellites, mainly carrying multispectral scanners, and more recently also carrying thematic mappers. They are primarily designed for scanning the vegetation cover of the land surface of the Earth and evaluating the effectiveness of satellite-based scanning systems for routine monitoring. The recordings are available on magnetic tape for computer analysis or in photographic form (usually known as Landsat images). Landsat is complemented by Seasat.
