Heterobasidion (family Polyporaceae) A genus of fungi in which clamp connections are absent and fruit bodies are resupinate to bracket-shaped. H. annosum (formerly Fomes annosus) is an important pathogen of trees, particularly conifers, in which it causes decay of heartwood and roots. Woody fruit bodies occur at the base of the infected tree and are orange-brown with a white margin. They are found throughout temperate regions.
