equatorial plate
equatorial plate An arrangement of the centromeres of chromosomes in which they lie approximately in one plane, at the equator of the spindle. This is seen during metaphase of mitosis and meiosis. In mitosis the centromeres lie exactly on the equatorial plate; in the first stage of meiosis the centromeres of homologous chromosomes lie on opposite sides of the equatorial plate.
