Buys Ballot's law A law enunciated in 1857 by the Dutch meteorologist Christoph Hendrik Buys Ballot (1817–90), professor of mathermatics at the University of Utrecht, that in the northern hemisphere the winds blow anticlockwise around centres of low pressure and clockwise around centres of high pressure. In the southern hemisphere both these tendencies are reversed.
