Mukan Fumon (1212–91). Zen pupil of [Enni] Benʾen, who was summoned by the emperor Kameyama to exorcise the ghosts who were disturbing his new palace in Kyōto, the traditional priests having failed. Mukan and his monks sat in silent meditation and the spirits disappeared. The emperor converted the palace to a Zen monastery, Nanzen-ji, and Mukan became the first abbot.
