Selene in Greek mythology, the goddess of the moon, identified with Artemis. She fell in love with Endymion and asked Zeus to grant him a wish. Endymion chose immortality and eternal youth, which Zeus granted, but only on condition that Endymion remain forever asleep. In another story, Selene visited Endymion nightly as he lay asleep, and bore him fifty daughters.
