Ourense
Ourense (ō-ōōrān´sā), formerly Orense (ōrān´sā), city (1990 pop. 109,283), capital of Ourense prov., NW Spain, in Galicia, on the Miño River. It is the center of an agricultural region with extensive vineyards. There are some light industries. A Roman settlement, it reached its greatest importance as the capital of the kings of the Suebi (5th–6th cent.). It has a fine 12th-century bridge and a Gothic cathedral, frequently restored. There are hot sulfur springs, known since Roman times.
