Karl Hofer, 1878–1955, German painter. After a stay in Paris, where he was influenced by Cézanne's works, Hofer settled in Berlin (1913). He developed a restrained expressionist style revealing melancholic psychical isolation in works such as Three Maskers (1922; Wallraf-Richartz Mus., Cologne). In 1943, Hofer's studio was destroyed by the Nazis.
