sudarium in the Roman Catholic Church, a cloth supposedly impressed with an image of Christ's face, with which St Veronica is said to have wiped his face on the way to Calvary. Recorded from the early 17th century, the word comes from Latin, literally ‘napkin’, from sudor ‘sweat’.
