renal (ree-năl) adj. relating to or affecting the kidneys. r. artery either of two large arteries arising from the abdominal aorta and supplying the kidneys. r. cell carcinoma see hypernephroma. r. function tests tests for assessing the function of the kidneys, which include measurements of the specific gravity of urine, creatinine clearance time, and blood urea levels, as well as intravenous urography and renal angiography. r. tubule (uriniferous tubule) the fine tubular part of a nephron, through which water and certain dissolved substances are reabsorbed back into the blood.
