Prospero
Prospero in Shakespeare's The Tempest, the exiled Duke of Milan who exercises magical powers over the island on which he lives, and over Ariel and Caliban who are constrained to serve him. At the end of the play, preparing to return to Milan, he promises to break his staff and drown his book: symbols of his magical prowess.
