Praise ★★★ 1998

Firsttime director Curran scores big with this downbeat sexanddrugs saga. Gordan (Fenton) has quit his convenience store job to spend his time drinking with his mates in his grubby Brisbane apartment. Former coworker Cynthia (Holder) invites Gordon to her parents' empty house where the duo spend their time with various chemical substances, alcohol, and sex. They wind up sticking together out of mutual need and never rise above their marginal existence. Still, both director and actors deliv er a powerful production. Adapted from the novel by McGahan, who wrote the screenplay. 97m/C VHS, DVD . AU Peter Fenton, Sacha Horler; D: John Curran; W: Andrew McGahan; C: Dion Beebe. Australian Film Inst. '99: Actress (Horler), Adapt. Screenplay.
