San Fernando

The Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition | Date: 2008

San Fernando city (1990 pop. 22,580), Los Angeles co., S Calif., in the San Fernando valley; inc. 1911. Among its industries are clothing and electronics. The valley, first entered by Europeans in 1769, was early used for journeys to N California. Gold was found in 1842 before the big gold strike. Founded in 1874, San Fernando is the oldest city in the valley. San Fernando Mission (1797) is nearby.
