Hexham, diocese of. The see was created in 678 for part of Northumbria. Theodore unsuccessfully tried to persuade Cuthbert to be bishop, who, though consecrated, refused. The most notable bishop was St John of Beverley (686–705; York 705–18). The bishopric collapsed under the Danish invasions (c.821) and was not revived.
