Athenry, battle of, 1316. The battle, east of Galway, on 10 August 1316, was a heavy defeat for the O'Connors, who were in alliance with Edward Bruce. They were opposed by an Anglo-Irish force led by Richard de Bermingham and William de Burgh. Their chief Felim O'Connor was slain, and their power broken. But Edward Bruce continued his struggle to create an Irish kingdom for himself.
