Algiers, bombardment of, 1816. On 27 August 1816, Lord Exmouth, in command of nineteen British warships and assisted by a Dutch squadron under Admiral van Capellan, bombarded Algiers for eight hours, destroying much of the town. The Dey then agreed to abolish Christian slavery in his dominions, which he had earlier refused to do.
