Applicants must supply proof of eligibility and documentation of financial need. They must have a GPA of 2.5 or higher cumulatively (3.0 or higher within their major) and be majoring in anthropology, history, Alaska Native or American Indian studies, or another discipline that involves research and learning about Alutiiq culture. Along with their application, they must submit 1) a 300-to 600-word letter that includes their personal and family history, their schooling or work history, and their educational and life goals; and 2) a 200-to 400-word essay on how their education may benefit the Alutiiq people. Eligibility Requirements: This is a statewide competition open to students in New York in 3 categories: grades 4-5, grades 6-8, and grades 9-12. Individual students and groups of students (including entire classes) may be nominated. All nominations for the award must be made by a teacher or administrator in the school attended by the entrants. Research projects prepared for other competitions (e.g., History Day) are eligible if they meet other relevant criteria, especially the use of historical records. An annotated bibliography is required for all entries. A substantial portion of the research must be based on historical records from archives, museums, historical societies, libraries, local governments, community organizations, businesses, families, and/or individuals. The product of the student research may be any of the following: research paper; exhibit; audiovisual production; performance; proposal for designation of historic marker, property, or district; or web sites, PowerPoint presentations, and other computer-based entries. Eligibility Requirements: Each 2-year and 4-year college and university in the United States and its possessions may nominate up to 6 sophomores or juniors from either or both categories of this program: 1) students who intend to prepare for a career in environmental public policy, and 2) Native American and Alaska Native students who intend to prepare for a career in health care or tribal public policy. For the first category, the program seeks future leaders across a wide spectrum of environmental fields, such as policy, engineering, science, education, urban planning and renewal, business, health, justice, and economics. For the second category, the program seeks future Native American and Alaska Native leaders in public and community health care, tribal government, and public policy affecting Native American communities, including land and resource management, economic development, and education. Nominees must be U.S. citizens, nationals, or permanent residents with a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Along with their application, they must submit an 800-word essay discussing a significant public speech, legislative act, or public policy statement by former Congressman Morris K. Udall and its impact on their field of study, interests, and career goals. Selection is based on demonstrated commitment to 1) environmental issues through substantial commitment to and participation in 1 or more of the following: campus activities, research, community service, or public service; or 2) tribal public policy or Native American health through substantial contributions to and participation in 1 or more of the following: campus activities, tribal involvement, community or public service, or research; a course of study and proposed career likely to lead to position where nominee can make significant contributions to the shaping of environmental, tribal public policy, or Native American health care issues, whether through scientific advances, public or political service, or community action; and leadership, character, desire to make a difference, and general well-roundedness. Applicants must intend to study English or southern history and literature and must submit a family financial report and certified proof of the Confederate record of 1 ancestor, with the company and regiment in which he served. They must have at least a 3.0 GPA in high school. Residency in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Tennessee, or Virginia is required. Deadline for Receipt: March of each year.
