Ribera, José (1591–1652) Spanish painter and graphic artist. His early work, like that of Caravaggio, used dark shadows, but Ribera was capable of expressing great tenderness. His late paintings, such as The Clubfooted Boy (1642), are often richly coloured and softly modelled. Until the Napoleonic Wars, he and Bartolomé Murillo were the only Spanish painters of international repute.
