propanol (propyl alcohol) Colourless alcohol used as a solvent and in the manufacture of various chemicals. It exists as two isomers. Normal propanol, CH3CH2CH2OH, is a by-product of the synthesis of methanol (methyl alcohol). Isopropanol (isopropyl alcohol), (CH3)2CHOH, is a secondary alcohol that is easily oxidized into acetone.
