Kisangani

Kisangani (formerly Stanleyville) City and port on the River Congo, n central Democratic Republic of Congo. English explorer Henry M. Stanley founded Kisangani in 1883. During the 1950s, it was the headquarters of the Congolese National Movement led by Patrice Lumumba. During the 1960s, it was the focus for a series of unsuccessful rebellions. In 1996 it was at the centre of the Hutu refugee crisis in Zaïre (now D.R. Congo). Pop. (2002 est.) 510,300.
