Sava, St
The Concise Oxford Dictionary of the Christian Church
Sava, St (c.1175–1235), also Sabas, patron of
Serbia. In 1191 Rastko, a son of the Serbian king, went secretly to Mount
Athos and became a monk under the name Sava. In 1206 he returned to Serbia, where as archimandrite of the monastery of Studenica he took an active part in the religious and political life of the country. In 1219 he established an independent Serbian Church, of which he was consecrated the first archbishop by the Part. of Nicaea. Feast day in the Serbian Church, 14 Jan.
