thymus n. A double-lobed endocrine gland situated just below the thyroid gland at the base of the neck, formerly believed to be vestigial in adults but now known to have a crucial role in the lymphatic system and to be the source of T lymphocytes.[From Greek thymos the sweetbread or thymus gland]
