Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States; official name
VFW an association founded in Columbus, Ohio, in 1899 and chartered by Congress in 1936. To be eligible, members must have served in the U.S. military in a foreign country or in hostile waters during a campaign for which the U.S. government has authorized the awarding of a medal. The association, which is based in Kansas City, Missouri, helps members in dealing with the
Veterans Administration and works to secure benefits for veterans in areas such as job training and employment. Its local branches also sponsor patriotic and educational programs for communities and youth. Membership is nearly 1.75 million, making it the second-largest veterans' organization, after the
American Legion.
