Courtrai, Battle of

A Dictionary of World History

Courtrai, Battle of (11 July 1302) Sometimes known as the ‘Battle of the Golden Spurs’. Philip IV of France had attempted to overrun Flanders but Flemish troops fought the French at Courtrai. Flemish burghers defeated the French nobility, and, in celebration of victory, hung their spurs in the churches of Bruges. The Battle of Courtrai was one of the most significant defeats suffered by France in the 14th century. Charles VI of France responded by sacking Courtrai in 1382.
