Benelux Customs Union

A Dictionary of Contemporary World History

Benelux Customs Union Effective from 1 January 1948 between Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxemburg, to complement the economic and monetary union between Belgium and Luxemburg established in 1921 and 1944 respectively. An economic union followed in 1960. In contrast to the European Union, it is not a supranational orgnization, as the three members retain their full sovereignty in all common areas of policy. However, close co-operation and consultation has not only increased the movement of goods and capital between the three countries, but it has also given them added weight and experience in their support for the process of European integration.
