ROME - Mimma-Marie Cammarata does not have pleasant memories of her walk from one of Pompeii's train stations to the other.

"It's pretty long, and there are abandoned dogs everywhere," said Cammarata, a high-school teacher from Cherry Hill, N.J., who walked it two years ago with a friend. "There's not much to look at. There are a few restaurants, but it's not anything a tourist would like to see."

The traffic is heavy, the scenery depressing. "I wouldn't want to do the walk by myself," she said.
