A cDNA clone of unknown function, DEA1, was isolated from arachidonic acid-treated tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) leaves by differential display PCR. The gene, DEA1, is expressed in response to the programmed cell death-inducing arachidonic acid within 8 h following treatment of a tomato leaflet, 16 h prior to the development of visible cell death. DEA1 transcript levels were also affected by the late blight pathogen, Phytophthora infestans. To gain further insight into the transcriptional reg...

Cell death in the unicellular chlorophyte Dunaliella tertiolecta. A hypothesis on the evolution of apoptosis in higher plants and metazoans
Plant Physiology
; Apoptosis is essential for normal growth and development of multicellular organisms, including metazoans and higher plants. Although cell death processes have been reported in unicellular organisms, key elements of apoptotic pathways have not been identified. Here, we show that when placed in

DPL-1 DP, LIN-35 Rb and EFL-1 E2F Act With the MCD-1 Zinc-Finger Protein to Promote Programmed Cell Death in Caenorhabditis elegans
Genetics
; ABSTRACT The genes egl-1, ced-9, ced-4, and ced-3 play major roles in programmed cell death in Caenorhabditis elegans. To identify genes that have more subtle activities, we sought mutations that confer strong cell-death defects in a genetically sensitized mutant background. Specifically, we

Spotted leaf11, a Negative Regulator of Plant Cell Death and Defense, Encodes a U-Box/Armadillo Repeat Protein Endowed with E3 Ubiquitin Ligase Activity(W)
Plant Cell
; The rice (Oryza sativa) spotted leaf11 (spl11) mutant was identified from an ethyl methanesulfonate-mutagenized indica cultivar IR68 population and was previously shown to display a spontaneous cell death phenotype and enhanced resistance to rice fungal and bacterial pathogens. Here, we have

Cell death in the central nervous system: Therapeutic possibilities?
Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine
; Over the last 20 years, a rising tidal wave of data has been produced regarding the study of cell death. That cells die in different ways has really been fully appreciated only recently, with the genetic dissection of cell death in a model system, the nematode. This work has led to the realization

The science of cellular suicide. (research on cell death)
Science News
; The science of cellular suicide From the earliest days of an organism's development, right up until the bitter end, new cells are born and old ones die. Moreover, cell death can occur in predictable patterns, especially during embryonic development. The fetal hand, for example, looks at first like
