CHANCES ARE, THE NAMES Of few American cabinetmakers are as familiar to non-collectors and non-antiques buffs as Duncan Phyfe (1768-1854). In fact, his name was probably already well known almost 200 years ago. Through his career from late in the 18th century into the mid-19th century, Phyfe, who was born in Scotland, was a promoter par excellence, gaining recognition for his work from "big money" clients.
