Kerosene subsidy: Study suggests rationalisation

NEW DELHI, India, Nov 4 -- With under-recovery from kerosene touching Rs 13 a litre and its diversion becoming a drain on public sector oil companies, a study sponsored by the Petroleum Ministry has suggested taking above poverty line card holders out from the purview of subsidies. This will amount to 41.2 per cent savings of current kerosene subsidy.

"If the leakage is controlled, this saving can give enough scope for government to keep subsidised kerosene price for below poverty line (BPL) families at lower level," says a report prepared by National Council of Applied Economic Research. It ...
