Microscale Determination of the Molar Volume

Abstract

The volume of hydrogen released by the redox reaction of 3.5-mm magnesium and 1M hydrochloric acid is measured in a graduated 5-mL plastic syringe. Considering the results of the experiment, the molar mass of magnesium and its change of the oxidation state the molar volume of hydrogen can be calculated.

The reaction time of the magnesium sample is measured under the conditions of the experiment. By changing these conditions (concentration, temperature) their influence can be determined.
