"There are so many iconic moments that you can just feel their weight," says Caraid O'Brien of her new version of Sholem Asch's "Motke Ganev" (Motke the Thief) that begins performances next week at the University Settlement.

Galway-born O'Brien has found an unlikely soul mate in Asch, a turn-of-the-century Yiddish writer who has received growing recognition in recent years for his uncompromising style and relentless pushing of the boundaries of Yiddish literature. Aaron Beall, who founded the New York Fringe Festival, directs the play for the Todo Con Nada theater company.
