ABSTRACT

Four supercell motion forecast algorithms are investigated with respect to their hodograph-analysis parameters. Another method derived from the data presented herein, the so-called offset method, is used to develop a baseline standard for the aforementioned schemes, using the observed storm motions and the mean wind. It is not a forecast scheme, as it is based on knowing the observed storm motions. This work explores the sensitivity of these algorithms to their arbitrary param...

A Sensitivity Study of Hodograph-Based Methods for Estimating Supercell Motion
Weather and Forecasting ; ABSTRACT Four supercell motion forecast algorithms are investigated with respect to their hodograph-analysis parameters. Another method derived from the data presented herein, the so-called offset method, is used to develop a baseline standard for the aforementioned schemes, using the observed
Wind and turbulence in a sparse but regular plant canopy
Journal of Applied Meteorology ; ABSTRACT Wind velocity statistics from several points within a regular but sparse array of clumped corn plants are analyzed, with each clump consisting of 12 plants, having a mean height of 1.6 m and a collective leaf area of about 2.75 ml and occupying approximately 0.8 m^sup 2^ of ground area.
Oblique, Stratified Winds about a Shelter Fence. Part I: Measurements
Journal of Applied Meteorology ; ABSTRACT Wind statistics were measured using cup and sonic anemometers, placed upwind and downwind from a porous plastic windbreak fence (height h = 1.25 m, length Y= 114 m, resistance coefficient k^sub r0^ = 2.4, and porosity p = 0.45) standing on otherwise uniform land (short grass with roughness
Evaluation of Boundary Layer Similarity Theory for Stable Conditions in CASES-99
Monthly Weather Review ; ABSTRACT The Monin-Obukhov similarity theory and a generalized formulation of the mixing length for the stable boundary layer are evaluated using the Cooperative Atmosphere-Surface Exchange Study-1999 (CASES-99) data. The large-scale wind forcing is classified into weak, intermediate, and strong

Generalized VTD Retrieval of Atmospheric Vortex Kinematic Structure. Part I: Formulation and Error Analysis
Monthly Weather Review ; ABSTRACT The primary circulation of atmospheric vortices, such as tropical cyclones and tornadoes, can be estimated from single-Doppler radar observations using the ground-based velocity track display (GBVTD) algorithm. The GBVTD algorithm has limitations in the following four areas: 1) distortion
Observing Coherent Boundary Layer Motions Using Remote Sensing and Surface Pressure Measurement
Journal of Atmospheric and Oceanic Technology ; ABSTRACT In this paper, high-frequency pressure time series measured by microbarographs are used to extract information on the existence and characteristics of convective rolls in the convective boundary layer. Rolls are identified in radar and satellite data, and it is shown that the pressure
Forecasting the Maintenance of Quasi-Linear Mesoscale Convective Systems
Weather and Forecasting ; ABSTRACT The problem of forecasting the maintenance of mesoscale convective systems (MCSs) is investigated through an examination of observed proximity soundings. Furthermore, environmental variables that are statistically different between mature and weakening MCSs are input into a logistic
Observations of Vertical Wind Shear Heterogeneity in Convective Boundary Layers
Monthly Weather Review ; ABSTRACT Dual-Doppler wind syntheses from mobile radar observations obtained during the International H2O Project document some of the spatial variability of vertical wind profiles in convective boundary layers. Much of the variability of popular forecasting parameters such as vertical wind shear
The Motion of Simulated Convective Storms as a Function of Basic Environmental Parameters
Monthly Weather Review ; ABSTRACT Based on results from a three-dimensional-cloud-resolving model, it is shown that simulated convective storm motions are affected by thermodynamic as well as kinematic properties of the environment. In addition to the mean wind and its vertical shear, the effect on isolated storm motion of
